This unique Kākahu, set in black, white and red, is named “Manu-ahi-ā-Mahuika,” meaning Mahuika’s fire bird. In Māori Lengend, Mahuika is the Goddess and keeper of fire. In one of her more well-known legends, featuring her grandson, the demi-god Māui, Mahuika is tricked by Māui into giving him her fingernails of fire so he can learn the secrets of fire-making. The legends of Mahuika’s generosity and sacrifice for the sake of human-kind are a reminder to look after the fire within us all. This Kākahu symbolises our inheritance from Mahuika, the knowledge of cooking food, keeping warm and finding your way in the dark. As the inheritors of these gifts, we are able to soar to great hights. This Kākahu reflects the importance of listening to your gut, following your passions, striving to achieve your goals and seeking to fulfill your purpose(s) in life.
This Kākahu blends the traditional with the modern. Lovingly made by Manurei Products in Rotorua, this stunning piece reflects the high standard of tikanga and aroha applied to its creation.
