This unique Kākahu is named “Kōtare”, after the sacred Kingfisher which is native to Aotearoa. Resembling the appearance of the Kōtare, this Kākahu is set in black, green, white, turquoise and deep blue.

Kōtare were traditionally admired by Māori for their ability to patiently perch for long periods of time and led to the name of the elevated platform in a pā where a sentry would stand being referred to as the kōtare. This Kākahu, like the sacred Kingfisher, resembles both kaitiaakitanga (guardianship) and wairuatanga (spirituality).
