Kōtare were traditionally admired by Māori for their ability to patiently perch for long periods of time and led to the name of the elevated platform in a pā where a sentry would stand being referred to as the kōtare. This Kākahu, like the sacred Kingfisher, resembles both kaitiaakitanga (guardianship) and wairuatanga (spirituality).
