This unique Kākahu, set in black, white, green and blue is named “Kiwa-ā-Rangi.” Kiwa is one of several kaitiaaki (divine guardians) of the ocean in the traditions of some iwi (tribes) of the East Coast of the North Island of Aotearoa. A poetic name for the Pacific Ocean is Te Moana Nui ā Kiwa (The great ocean of Kiwa). Rangi is short for Ranginui, the atua (god) of the skies, the stars, the moon and the sun. The name of this Kākahu, “Kiwa-ā-Rangi” resembles the place where the sky meets the ocean on the horizon of a clear cloudless day or where the stars of Rangi’s heavens pool into the water’s reflection of a bright night sky.
